SAE J429 Mechanical & Material Requirements for Inch Fasteners (Grades 2, 5, 8) Reference Guide
Standard SAE J429 specification for inch-series externally threaded fasteners: proof strength, yield, tensile, core hardness, and head marking identification slashes.
Standard Scope
Defines the mechanical, metallurgical, and material requirements for inch-series steel bolts, screws, studs, and sems in sizes up to 1-1/2 in. inclusive per SAE J429. It specifies standard North American automotive and industrial fastener strength grades (Grade 1, Grade 2, Grade 5, Grade 5.2, Grade 8, Grade 8.2), proof load strength, minimum yield strength, minimum tensile strength, core hardness (Rockwell B/C), and required head marking identification slashes.
Typical Applications
- •Automotive and commercial vehicle chassis, suspension arms, and drivetrain mounting (Grade 5 and Grade 8).
- •Heavy construction equipment, mining machinery, and agricultural implements.
- •Structural bolted connections in industrial cranes, material handling hoists, and machine frames.
- •General light manufacturing, electrical brackets, and non-structural hardware (Grade 1 and Grade 2).
Key Engineering Concepts
Head Marking Identification
Grade 2 has no head slashes; Grade 5 features 3 radial slashes spaced at 120°; Grade 8 features 6 radial slashes spaced at 60°.
Proof Stress ($S_p$)
Defined as 85 ksi for Grade 5 (up to 1 in. diameter) and 120 ksi for Grade 8; represents the maximum usable stress before non-linear plastic strain begins.
Unified Thread Tensile Area ($A_s$)
Calculated per ASME B1.1 as $A_s = 0.7854 \left(d - \frac{0.9743}{n}\right)^2$, where $n$ is threads per inch (TPI). Fine threads (UNF) exhibit larger tensile areas and higher static clamp force than coarse threads (UNC).
Quenched & Tempered Heat Treatment
Grade 5 is medium carbon steel quenched and tempered at a minimum of 800 °F (427 °C); Grade 8 is medium carbon alloy steel quenched and tempered at 650 °F (343 °C).

Engineering Notes & Best Practices
- •Grade 5 bolts undergo reduction in proof strength from 85 ksi down to 74 ksi when diameter exceeds 1 in. (up to 1-1/2 in.) due to lower center core hardenability during quenching.
- •Grade 8 bolts maintain uniform 120 ksi proof strength and 130 ksi yield strength across all sizes from 1/4 in. through 1-1/2 in. diameter.
- •When replacing fasteners in dynamic or fatigue-critical applications, never downgrade from Grade 8 to Grade 5, as the reduced clamp force can cause joint separation, bolt bending, and accelerated fatigue failure.
